Before you choose the type that will be
applied to the exterior of your home, there are
things that you need to know about the materials
that are used to make siding. Each type of
siding has pros and cons and things you should
be aware of before you make your selection.
While this is not a complete list of all of the
siding materials that are available, here are 4
of the most commons ones with a brief
description concerning their durability and
maintenance requirements.
Wood Siding:
Wood is the most traditional material for
siding. Since most exterior cladding was once
made of organic materials, wood was a natural
choice. While still used today, its popularity
has given way to more durable materials. A nice
design feature of real wood siding is that it
comes in many shapes other than the standard
horizontal planks. If properly cared for wood
will last, but if you choose this type of
siding, routine maintenance to protect it
against rotting and pests is essential. Wood
siding, while treated for fire prevention, can
still be a fire hazard, and if painted, will
require fresh paint over the years.
Vinyl Siding:
Vinyl siding makes up the largest part of
the market by providing a quality product that
does not require painting and comes in a variety
of sizes and colors. It is extremely durable,
but does not have the look and feel of real
wood. Over time the color may fade, but that
occurs years into ownership.
Metal Siding:
Aluminum and steel siding are durable
materials. There are a variety of sizes and
color choices available, but with metal siding,
keep in mind that, over time, the color may fade
and if painted, may require extra maintenance.
As the paint ages, it may flake and/or become
chalky looking. This can be remedied with a new
coat of paint. It is best to remove the old
paint with a pressure wash, but be cautious of
the amount of pressure as it can dent the metal.
Check with a home improvement center or paint
store about the preparation and process of
painting siding. Rust spots should be treated
immediately.
Fiber Cement Siding:
Cement fiber board is an excellent material
for siding. It is extremely durable and delivers
the look of wood without the threats of being a
fire hazard or a sanctuary for pests. This is a
highly recommended product for its natural look
and easy care.
There
are many options to choose from when it comes to
cladding the exterior of your home with siding.
You must first assess your needs. Take your
climate into consideration. Think about what is
more important to you, the look you are trying
to achieve or the potential maintenance. If
design is foremost in your mind, then real wood
is an excellent option for its variations of
sizes and shapes. If low maintenance is the
determining factor, then you should choose a
more durable material. The best advice you can
be given is to contact a reputable siding
contractor and discuss your goals. |
