Organize your Custom Closet

A popular trend that began with luxury estates, but has now gone mainstream, is the custom closet...

Ventilated shelving is going by the wayside and being replaced by beautiful, detailed cabinetry that once was only reserved for kitchens. Companies that specialize in closet build out can assess, design and install custom cabinetry that will improve and organize your life. There was a time when your shoes were lined up along the wall of a standard closet, but now they can have custom racks. You can organize your clothes by season or put an end to who gets to have more space by customizing your closet with his and her sides. Shelves and drawers are abundant in custom closets. Many spaces, that are large enough, can accommodate a center island for storage and a stone countertop for work space. Your imagination is the only limit with today’s custom closets, and they add great value to your home.

Before you decide on a closet company, also consider that many of these companies are now filling the demand for other custom cabinetry throughout the house. These are a few examples:

Laundry Rooms

Pantries

Home Offices

Garage Cabinetry, Storage and Workspace

Home Theaters

There are many levels of custom finish out when it comes to closet cabinetry. A basic option is to explore retail storage solution companies that offer modular systems which can be fit into your room by entering the dimensions of the closet into a computer and then deciding which components are important to you.  A design can then be rendered showing how their pre-fabricated components could be fit into your space. There is a great deal of flexibility in this method and you can easily achieve a closet that can keep you well organized. Originally these types of modular systems started out white, but in time have evolved to offer numerous wooden finishes. For a custom closet that supersedes the standard wire shelving that many builders use, this is a very cost effective option.

If you have a larger budget another option will give your closet the same look you see in today’s kitchen cabinetry. The process is much the same as when installing new kitchen cabinets. A closet company can come to your home and discuss your needs or you can visit their showroom to see samples. A visit to the showroom is highly recommended because it allows you to visualize newer concepts in cabinetry that you might not have known were available Also visiting the showroom will ensure that you get exactly the closet that you want.  Once you have explored the options that are available, ask the expert about pricing. Many custom closet companies price per linear foot. The closet company needs to know your budget, and you need to know what can be achieved with the allotted amount. There are numerous ways to tailor the cabinets to your tastes. You can choose from numerous door styles, molding details and hardware options. Once you have made your selections and your closet has been designed, the cabinets will be ordered in the finish and detailing of your choice.

When they arrive, the closet company will install them in your space. Once they have completed the installation. Take a day or so to make a punch list of any problems that the cabinets have. Here is a short list.

Do all of the drawers glide smoothly?

Are the door tightly hinged, aligned and fit smoothly against the cabinet?

Are there any loose pieces?

Are there any damages to the walls, as a result of the installation, that need to be corrected?

Do any of the sections have damage as a result transport or installation?

Bring this list to the attention of the closet company representative once you have thoroughly inspected the installation. They take pride in their work and want you to be satisfied. You should follow these same steps no matter which room that you have custom cabinetry installed nor the price point.

A final type of custom closet, that is popular in exclusive homes, is cabinetry that is crafted on-site. A closet designer will draft plans and make specifications for a custom craftsman’s crew to create them from scratch. This can be the most expensive way to outfit a closet, but can be the most detailed. While not as practical as the previous and more popular method, cabinetry built on-site has no limitations which can arise from specific size ranges for the cabinets that pre-fabricated companies offer. The ceiling is truly the limit with an on-site job.

No matter which type of custom closet you choose, it can be a rewarding investment in your home. You will enjoy the added luxury, while a future buyer will find your home has more detail than other comparables.
